Location, Location, Location

Posted in weddings at 9:11 am by greengirl

One of the first things to do when planning your wedding is to choose a location.  There are many ways to help set the tone of your green wedding.  The most obvious is to chose a nature center or botanical garden for your wedding, where paying the cost of rental would act as a donation to their programs.  Of course, with many large botanical gardens, the price can be very steep as they are popular locations, but you may be able to find a smaller center focused on youth education programs.

Book your wedding and your reception at the same location to keep everyone from having to drive from one to the other.  Or if you have a lot of out of town guests, have your reception at the hotel where most of the guests will be staying to save them from having to drive.  That will also prevent drunk driving.

Choose a beautiful location so that you don’t have to waste a lot of paper and other resources to decorate.  With a beautiful location, simple decorations are all you need.

Ocean Wisdom

Recently, I was listening to a broadcast of the Bioneers on an independent radio station. The speaker was talking about an organization called Ocean Revolution, which was developed to “inspire and empower a new wave of young leaders to protect our oceans.” He also spoke about an amazing effort called the Census of Marine Life. The census is an effort to catalog the past, present and future life of the oceans. Knowing which areas of the ocean have the highest diversity of life will allow scientists and activists to more effectively protect those areas.

Green with Oscar Envy

Posted in energy, education, global warming at 11:37 am by greengirl

Al Gore won an Oscar this year for An Inconvenient Truth.  While he was helping to present another award, he mentioned that the Oscars have gone green this year.  So, I went to their website as he instructed and checked it out.  Hiding inconspicuously in a lower corner of the Oscar site are the words Go Green.  While it doesn’t specifically say what the Oscar organization staff did to make the Oscars more green (they “endeavored to select supplies and services with a sensitivity toward reducing the threats we face from global warming, species extinction, deforestation, toxic waste, and hazardous chemicals in our water and food”), it does have a long list of items that consumers can do to make a difference in their energy usage.  All their suggestions were taken from the Natural Resources Defense Council website.  It’s a small step, but a step forward nonetheless.

I am a slacker.  I have all sorts of excuses for not posting for nearly a month, but no good reasons.  I shall resolve to do better.  :)
